Yellowstone wrapped up its dramatic fifth season last night and while there was plenty to get excited about in the shocking finale, fans are already looking ahead to new chapters of Dutton drama. They didn’t have to look far, either, because during the finale, Paramount Network aired a brand new teaser trailer for the Yellowstone prequel 1923, and with it, our first serious look into what’s ahead for the new chapter of the period Western.
The trailer begins with a voiceover from Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), saying, in what could well be a Dutton family motto, “In Montana, there’s a war over my family’s land, and they’re losing it.”
The wayward Dutton son spent the first season of the series attempting to make his way back to Montana from Africa, where he was working as a big game hunter. It seems the journey isn’t over for Spencer yet, as in the trailer he’s seen hiding out on a train with some very menacing looking fellow passengers.
Of course, he’s not the only Dutton dealing with threats, as carloads of enemies pull up to the Dutton ranch and open fire. Elsewhere, antagonist Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) is apparently still making trouble, ominously telling his henchman Banner (Jerome Flynn) “It’s time to build and army.”
Indeed, Banner is seen getting his hands dirty, tossing a body over a cliff—could this be the first of Yellowstone‘s metaphorical “trips to the train station”?
Certainly Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) seems to have had all he can take from the man, warning Whitfield, “I think this is as far as I feel like being pushed,” but whether or not that will work out well for the Dutton patriarch is no guarantee—as his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) says, “This ranch will drive you to your death.”
True to its name, the teaser only offers us our first hints at what’s to come, but one thing’s for certain, whatever it is, it’s sure to be filled to the brim with the Dutton family’s signature brand of intensity.
The first season of 1923 is currently making its first run on cable on Paramount Network—the show originally appeared on the Paramount+ streaming service in 2023.
Though the second season of the series is set to be the next chapter for the Dutton’s history, it certainly won’t be the last. In addition to a previously announced outing under the working title 1944, this week Deadline broke the news that Yellowstone stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have signed on to head up a new spinoff series centered on their characters Rip and Beth. While Paramount has yet to officially confirm the news, the actors had previously been rumored to be in negotiations to return to the flagship series for a sixth season.
