MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The new art piece “Oscillation” at the Marquette Commons is making noise, and we’ve seen people asking on social media about how public art is funded.
Marquette Arts and Culture Communications Coordinator Amelia Pruiett says installations use funds from multiple sources.
“We’re making sure all of our public art is truly brought to the public by multiple different partners, and it’s not just a special interest project for one person, right?” Pruiett said.
She says the resident-led Marquette Public Art Commission allocated about $24,000 toward the project from the city’s general fund. Oscillation also obtained $12,000 from the MI Arts and Culture Council Grant. The DDA and Travel Marquette funded $5,000 each.
“We’re fully funded by the 5% assessment on hotels,” said Travel Marquette CEO Susan Estler. “There’s no public funds there involved with anything that Travel Marquette does.”
Estler says outdoor recreation isn’t the only reason people live in and visit Marquette. She says public art showcases brilliant artists for everyone.
“Is really a great way to highlight bringing people here, also getting people out and doing things during a very dark time of year,” Estler said.
Pruiett says public art is a worthwhile community effort. Pieces like Oscillation bring visitors to Downtown Marquette, improving the economy and creating an area for community bonding.
“The opportunity to experience something different, something new, and that great opportunity to play and sparks curiosity of how does this thing work,” Pruiett said.
She says you can contact the Marquette Arts and Culture office with any questions at 906-228-0472.
The international traveling exhibit was originally created in Brooklyn, New York. You can interact with the light and sound installation daily until January 5.
