SPRINGFIELD (WGEM) – Drivers may start getting new alerts on Illinois roads and they may save someone’s life.
The Illinois State Police (ISP) and the state’s Department of Innovation and Technology announced Wednesday they are partnering with the Chicago-based company HAAS Alert to expand in-car notifications when there’s an incident involving ISP personnel on the road.
“One life, one injury, one crash is too many. Every time, move-over crashes are preventable if people simply slow down and move over,” said ISP Director Brendan Kelly.
Using GPS, the system will alert drivers to an incident through their infotainment system when they’re about 20 seconds away from crash site or traffic stop with state troopers on scene. Right now, notifications are available in Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen vehicles starting with those made in model year 2018. People also receive alerts when using the navigation app Waze or Apple Maps. The system works on all Illinois roads.
“Our services alerts motorists so that drivers get a message in the vehicle so that they can safely slow down and move over, eliminating that driver distraction,” said HAAS Alert Co-Founder and CEO Cory Hohs.
He said HAAS Alert is currently used by more than 4,000 agencies across North America to alert drivers to slow down and move over.
“Research has shown that alerting a driver in a vehicle reduces the chance of a collision by up to 90 percent,” Hohs said.
“These in-car infotainment system and navigation app alerts mean the preventability of a crash increases and the risk to our officers and motorists decreases. This additional advanced warning will ensure drivers are paying attention and focused on the road,” Kelly said.
Illinois law already requires drivers take action when approaching an incident involving emergency personnel. Known as “Scott’s Law,” it requires drivers slow down and, if possible, change lanes.
